University Choirs

The choir of the 鶹 is a humanistic, artistic, and educational meeting place, an intergenerational meeting point for the entire university community.

The university choir of the Ourense campus

The university choir of the Ourense campus, Schola Cantorum, was founded in the 2009/2010 academic year under the auspices of the Vice-Rector's Office of the Ourense campus after a period of four years operating as a term-time singing workshop. Xabier Álvarez was its first director and it is currently directed by Ruth Gonzlez.

It is made up of students, teachers, staff and former students of the 鶹. Its repertoire is characterised by a variety of styles, periods, and cultures and incorporates universal popular music, Galician music, sacred music, pop music and well-known soundtracks, with a special focus on contemporary choral composers.

The choir is seen as a humanistic, artistic, educational and intergenerational meeting place for the entire university community and is also open to the people of Ourense.

Rehearsals are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Music Room of the Faculty Building on the Ourense campus (Calle del Doctor Temes, 32004 Ourense).

Ruth Gonzlez was born in Ourense. She began her musical studies at the Conservatory of Music in Ourense, where she obtained her professional degree as a music teacher specialising in the flute in June 2004.
She furthered her training with courses in flute, analysis, and maintenance and mechanics of woodwind instruments with flute teachers (Antonio Arias, Julia Gllego, Jean-Claude Gérard, Laurent Blaiteau, Luis Soto, Fernando Raa, and Robert Winn), analysis (David Cuevas, Carlos Cambeiro, and Pablo Beltrn), and maintenance and mechanics of woodwind instruments with Manuel Ѳٲ Ventura.
She played the flute and piccolo in the Alongos Music Band and the South Galicia Symphony Orchestra, as well as collaborating in concerts with other Galician musicians and ensembles.

Her teaching experience began in 2004 at the Allariz School of Music as a teacher of music and movement and flute. Since 2005, she has been a flute teacher at the Municipal Music School of Sober (Lugo); since 2007, she has taught transverse flute, choir, and music theory at the Municipal Music School of Barbads; and since 2017, she has also been a transverse flute teacher at the Kontrapunto Academy.

She is also the director of two adult choirs: the Auria Canta Polyphonic Choir (Ourense) since 2013 and the Berea Choir (Sober) since 2016, as well as a children's and youth choir: the Barbads Music School Choir since 2012, with which she participated for three consecutive years in Ourencanto (a children's and youth choir gathering in Ourense with Josu Elberdin), and with a history of concerts by choral groups throughout Galicia, Len, and Portugal.

Her choral training continues to be very active: she has attended various courses in choral conducting, vocal technique and pilot choir with conductors from all over the world: Tamara Brooks Summer Course in Tui and Mondariz from 2013 to 2020 with choral and orchestral conductors (Julio Domnguez, Irene Gmez-Calado, Javier Busto, Brady Allred, Fernando Malvar-Ruiz, Fernando Briones, Adriana Tanus, Vtor Lima), FECOGA Course in 2018 with Basilio Astúlez, Choral Immersion Course in Noja in 2019 (with Josu Elberdin, Marco Garca de Paz, Esteban Sanz Vélez, David Azurza, Albert Alcaraz), Choral Workshop in Madrid in 2019 with John Rutter; and vocal technique (with Juan Abalde, Kevin Smith, Gloria Novoa and Borja Quiza)

She also complements her choral life as a singer in three vocal groups in Ourense: The University Choir of the Ourense Campus (since 2007), A Capela Madrigalista (since 2016) and the chamber group Kantantibus (since 2019).
