Alejandro F. Villaverde joined the Department of Systems Engineering and Control in January 2021 as a Ramn y Cajal fellow. He has a degree in industrial engineering (2004) and a PhD in systems & control engineering (2009), both from the University of Vigo. His research focuses on the modelling of dynamical systems, with the main motivation coming from biological applications. He develops methodologies for identification and analysis of nonlinear models, using techniques from optimization and systems and control theory. He also implements the methods as open source software tools. He is currently a member of the editorial boards of Symmetry, PLOS ONE, and Complexity. In the past, Dr. Villaverde was a postdoctoral research associate at the Bioprocess Engineering Group (IIM CSIC) in two different periods (from 2009 to 2015 and from 2016 to 2020), in which he worked on several European projects. Between both stages he worked at the universities of Minho and Oxford as an I2C fellow, funded by the Xunta de Galicia. He has also spent research stays at the universities of Groningen (2008), MIT (2009), and Stanford (2010, 2011). More information can be found at his webpage: http://afvillaverde.webs.uvigo.gal/
